Just emphasizes your point of a lot of land dedicated to cork!

There is an Iron Age site not too far outside of Braga! Absolutely worth a visit. And up in Viana do Castelo there is Citania de Santa Luzia, which we wrote about: https://the-ramble.net/2022/03/08/in-country-the-north-of-portugal-part-1. Save Evora's delights for winter when you want a dose of sunshine, or Spring for glorious fields of wildflowers. :-)

I loved Evora when we visited in October 2022, but agree that it's far too hot to live in that area! Definitely interested in checking out some of the ancient sites in the area (probably while we twiddle our thumbs waiting for residency cards), so I'm looking forward to more details of this trip!

IMO, missing a food is not enough of a reason to not make the jump. :-) We just learn to make foods on our own. Teriyaki sauce is available here, and grills (or, in our case, a grill pan). It's not *quite* the same, but close enough. What's harder are the foods you can't re-create. Not to be a downer, but PNW/ Alaskan wild salmon is at the top of that list for us. (It's all Norwegian and farmed. It's not bad, but its not the same thing.) For me, filet mignon has been a real let down everywhere in Europe. Sweet corn.

Talking about interesting food places is never a whoops! Have made note of several of your recommendations, particularly the Japanese restaurant. I expect that Seattle-style teriyaki is going to be one of the few cuisines we miss once we make the move to Europe (though we won't miss it enough to not make the jump!).

Kris, I have no idea if you'll see this with so much time passing. First of all, I'm *so* sorry that we missed your comment back in the day (so to speak). We aren't inundated with replies so I don't know how that happened. Sorry about that.

May I ask how you have progressed? So much has changed in the world, you could be anywhere at all. Hope for the best for you in any case!

100%!

We are aware of the tremendous privilege we have of being able to get off the worker-drone hamster wheel (John never met a metaphor he couldn't mangle), but since we could - we did. Thank goodness! (And, all age jokes aside, the picture was even better for me than for Lisa since we're a few years apart. I technically moved here in my 40s(!))

My dad always told me that, in order to travel, we need three things, our health, time, and money. When we're young, we have our health and (hopefully) time, but not money. Then we worked, and worked, and worked. By the time we have enough money, sometimes we no longer our health or (sadly) time. That is why when our "Kevin" (whose name is "Casey") gave us the green light to retire, we started the moving to Portugal process the following week, and submitted our retirement notice 4 months later. No regrets, no looking back. Maybe one regret, we should've done it sooner :-)
